Thailand’s Right to Self-Defense Under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter Amid Recent Border Incident
Following the events on July 24, 2025, along the Thai-Cambodian border where Cambodian forces initiated heavy artillery attacks against Thai territory, including an assault on Phanom Dong Rak hospital and civilian communities resulting in numerous casualties and destruction, tensions in the area have escalated significantly.
In response, the Thai government has exercised its right to self-defense according to Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Thailand conducted retaliatory artillery fire to uphold national security and protect its citizens. The government has also called on the international community to condemn violations of international humanitarian law and related treaties committed by the opposing side, while preparing to urgently assist those affected.
Thailand continues to closely monitor the situation to prevent further escalation of violence and remains fully committed to maintaining peace and the safety of people along the border. The government welcomes cooperation from all parties to resolve the conflict peacefully and sustainably.,
